overnight on the daily cal website showing how intense that fire became. five people were living in a duplex. they all got out safely including a woman in a wheelchair who had to be helped out by police. four homes surrounding this one were also evacuated as a precaution. those people have been allowed back in except for the family of five that is homeless this morning. firefighters in the meantime are evaluating the damage. >> during the firefight, there was a collapse of the roof and second floor which resulted in us backing out of the building and fighting the fire defensively. this is where we put our ladder trucks and spray water from the temperatures to of the roof and hose lines into the windows -- water from the tops of the roof and hose lines into the windows. >> reporter: part of the roof collapsed falling on the first story. but firefighters pulled back before that happened. nobody was hurt. now, there was some talk that maybe a propane tank may have been involved in starting this fire. firefighters will not confirm that this morning. they say once they're sure all the hot spots a

is in town. we also got a cal game so, whew, there's just so much going on! ! it makes me exhaust the just to talk about it. so it's going to be a busy weekend. use mass transit if you can. bart ferries muni are all stepping up service. bart told us they have not seen such numbers since they shut the bay bridge down and the giants victory parade a huge record setting day for bart. bart had two of its top ten ridership days already this week and they expect the numbers to go through the roof this weekend. san francisco's mayor says they can handle all the crowds and we're good to go for this weekend. so hopefully, traffic-wise, this is the calm before the big storm happening this weekend. for the latest on traffic conditions on the roads let's go inside to gianna. >> thank you. should be a very fun weekend in san francisco. in fact, most of the bay area. so far, we are not seeing too much this friday morning as far as accidents go. however, the bay bridge is starting to get a bit busy. they haven't turned on the metering lights. looks like the
for the daily cal when the fire was al full bore between midnight and 2 a.m. at one point the firefighters were inside, the second story was collapsing on them. they had to get out and fight it from the outside. i'm here with deputy fire chief. tell me about that moment when you started to realize that the structure's integrity was being compromised. >> so when the firefighters were inside the outside incident commander was evaluating the structure and saw the heavy amount of flames that were shooting out of the building and that's when they realized that there was going to be a collapse of the second story of the roof structure. so we went defensive spreading the water from the top of our ladder pipe in from the outside into the windows. that's what we call a defensive fire. >> reporter: when you're looking for hot spots, there's a lot of voids you say that hot spots could be hiding. >> with the collapse of the structure, the second floor, it's creating void spots that we can't get to the fire. so there's small hidden hotspots that we're trying to get to. we'll be here all morning waiting for

accused of driving a car that hit a man in the crosswalk right near the cal campus. police believe that elderly driver may have been under the influence. it happened around 8:40 at hurst and spruce streets. the injured man reportedly is in critical condition. >>> new security measures are in place at a school where police say a man abducted a girl. there is new restrictions at the school. police say 25-year-old bradley morasik, they say, he abducted a 9-year-old girl from a bathroom. she was able to break free and escape and then ran back to the campus reporting what happened. police also say he trespassed on also school campuses. he's due in court. >>> 7:05. new polls indicate president obama may already have the electoral votes to win a second term. 270 electoral votes are required to win the -- to win the presidency. an "associated press" poll says if the election were held today, president obama would win 271 votes. mott, 206 i lek troll votes. but more campaigning is to be had along with the presidential debate -- debates. >>> coming up at 7:15, what analysts are saying about
